On the 27th of March 2015 Millbury Nursing Home decided to hold a bake sale to raise money for Daffodil Day for cancer research.
We asked our staff and some family members of our residents if they would contribute by baking for us.
The morning of the bake sale, staff were all in their yellow t-shirts and shirts and fresh daffodils bought by Lucy and Thierry Grillet were in vases around the building.
We set up one table in the reception area to put the baked goods on. We ended up needing 3 of these tables as the amount of baked goods far exceeded our expectations.
We had advertised for the bake sale with posters put around the building. The turn out was amazing and the cakes were going fast.
The residents and family’s were in the dining room where tea and coffee was supplied.
We also had Music supplied by Martin Hubble who has played in Millbury Nursing Home before and he is liked by all residents.
and so the party began.
A lot of the cakes were eaten at the time and a lot were wrapped to be taken home.
Pictures were taken by Kieran Maguire and these were in the Meath Chronicle the following week.
We are delighted to announce that we managed to Raise €767.50 for Cancer Research and we will defiantly be doing this again next year.
The kindness and generosity shown by people who work in and who visit Millbury Nursing Home was amazing and we would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone for their help with this very good cause.

We all had a wonderful evening and the exhibition was officially opened by the Lord Mayor of Navan, Frances Dean, who gave a great speech to celebrate the occasion. Lucy Flynn Grillet , Person in charge in Millbury, also spoke glowingly about Tommy’s achievements since arriving in Millbury.

The exhibition was attended by lots of Tommy’s friends and relations, staff and residents of Millbury.

Tommy was delighted with his evening which was successful in more ways than one, as he sold more than half of the paintings on show and got a commission for another painting.

This was very encouraging for him and he is busy painting again to build up his portfolio of artworks

We believe that Tommy’s achievement has served as an inspiration to other residents and also to staff, who take great pride in his accomplishments. Thanks to Tommy, we now have many residents taking part in regular painting sessions. We encourage people to develop their own style of painting as Tommy did. As Tommy did not come from an artistic background, he was a mechanic his whole working life, he shows that it is never too late to learn a new skill! Tommy also takes part in all out other activities here in Millbury.

Millbury opened its doors to all creatures great and small for two days over the month of May 2014.

‘Woolly Wards Farm’ came for a visit bringing lots of animals for our residents to see. Our sitting rooms were turned into farm yards for the afternoon! We certainly had some May madness! The residents were able to see different animals and even hold and pet some of them!

On the first day we had lots of chickens with their chicks, ducks, rabbits, guinea pigs and hamsters! On the second day we had dogs, sheep, more ducks, pigs and even mice! There have been many studies showing the therapeutic and health benefits animals have on older people so this was a welcomed activity and enjoyed by all residents, residents families and even the staff!

‘Woolly Wards Farm’ is a family-run business specialising in bringing the farm out of the farm yard to schools and nursing homes. For more information about this alternative activity click here.

Many of our residents enjoy outside groups coming into Millbury to provide entertainment or a service. Integration with the community is encouraged. Having people coming in from the community brings news about the community and a fresh perspective to the residents. This activity represents the type of activity that we what we offer here in Millbury. Many of our residents would have grown up on farms in the country. So this activity was a type of reminiscence therapy which is important in stimulating communication and promoting confidence, especially in people with dementia.

Millbury Nursing Home is delighted to announce that we will be holding a second art exhibition for one of our talented residents, Tommy.

Tommy, who suffered a stroke that left him severely parlaysed and unable to express himself verbally came to Millbury Nursing Home three years ago. Through his rehabilitative process Tommy discovered a love for drawing and painting. Our activity coordinators encouraged Tommy with regular art classes and his painting improved to such a high level that Tommy was able to hold an art exhibition, last year, showing his art to friends, family, staff and residents which was a huge success. This is even more remarkable as Tommy is naturally right handed, but he has created all his art work using his left hand.

Tommy achieved the Resident Achievement Award at the NHI Care Awards. The judging panel for this national award thought Tommy was an inspiration to residents and a remarkable person who had achieved a significant success since moving into a residential setting. Tommy received his award in front of 400 people at a special ceremony in the Citywest Hotel.

We believe that Tommy’s achievement has served as an inspiration to other residents and also to staff, who take great pride in his accomplishments. Tommy took charge of his disability and discovered a new passion which allows him to have a new joy in his life once more. He makes the most of everyday, not letting his disability stand in the way of living his life!

The Millbury Art Exhibition will take place in late April 2014 and it will be opened by the Mayor of Navan.
